So you’ve chosen your deep cycle battery and got it installed. AGM deep cycle battery may require low maintenance but that doesn’t mean you can afford to use an incorrect charger or charging way. Keeping your battery charged can expand to its life. Choosing a smart battery chargers for deep cycle batteries is very important.
There are couple of things to consider to get the best Deep Cycle Battery Chargerbefore you start to charging. To ensure you the get the best out of your battery, contact us Spaceflight power for our guide to deep cycle battery chargers, and let us help you get the best brand and style of battery charger for your Deep Cycle Batteries, Caravans, Motorhomes, 4WDS, Marine, Solar and 12 Volt Battery Systems.
Knowing how many Amp hours your deep cycle battery stores allows you to work out and which type of charger you’ll need and about how long the charge will take. To calculate the charge time, find the Amp hour rating of your battery and divide it by the amp rating of the charger.
Which type of deep cycle battery chargers will be suitable?
A right type of deep cycle battery charger is the important step in maintaining battery health. Smart Chargers are compatible with flooded, gel and AGM deep cycle battery and can even detect the charge needed based on the battery’s voltage. Some 12v deep cycle battery chargers as long as come with reverse pulse technology that helps reduce internal impedance when the battery is charging, as well as lowering its temperature.
If you’re not using a smart charger, you’ll need to know the correct voltage for deep cycle batteries and set the charger accordingly. For AGM deep cycle batteries, the required rate of charging is 14.7 volts. Be careful not to overcharge your battery, doing so can damage the internal structure and reduces effectiveness.
Both under- or over-charging batteries can reduce the lifespan of the batteries. For right charging, refer to the instructions that came with your equipment. Most chargers are automatic and pre-programmed. Some chargers allow the user to set voltage and current values. Check the table above for deep-cycle flooded/wet charging guidelines.
To ensure the charger is set to the appropriate program for deep-cycle flooded/wet, AGM or gel, depending on the type of batteries you are charging.
Lead-acid batteries (deep-cycle flooded/wet, AGM or gel) do not have a memory effect, please do not need to be fully discharged before recharging.
Charge in well-ventilated place only.
Check electrolyte level to ensure plates are covered with water before charging. Use distilled water only, do not fill with acid.
Make sure all vent caps are secured properly on the battery before its charging.
Deep-cycle flooded/wet batteries will gas (bubble) towards the end of charger to make sure the electrolyte is fully mixed.
Never charge a frozen battery.
Avoid charging at temperatures over 120°F (49°C)
A ‘battery cycle’ mean one discharge and recharge cycle, and ‘cycling’ refers to using mix 80% of the battery’s capacity before fully recharging it. Deep cycle battery do not need to be cycled down on a daily basis and being left in a discharged state can short the battery life.
