Should you choose a lead-acid deep cycle battery?

Lithium-Ion Battery Maintenance: Tips for Longevity

Most people never stop thinking about the batteries that power their daily lives. Normally, we are most concerned about when the batteries are not working. But the fact is, although all batteries store energy, different types of batteries have great differences in the way of storing energy, which batteries are the most effective for different applications. For example, what is the difference between the batteries that power the golf carts and the battery on our TV remote control? In this article, we will discuss one of the most common battery types, lead-acid deep cycle battery.

What is a lead-acid deep cycle battery?

A lead-acid deep cycle battery is a kind of battery designed to provide a stable amount of current for a long time. This kind of battery would be installed with the inverter, and can also be used as a solar cell. The term “deep cycle” refers to the deep discharge capacity of the batteries. Unlike automobile batteries, deep cycle batteries can only discharge a very small amount before charging but can discharge nearly 80% before charging. Automobiles are designed to discharge quickly, while deep cycle batteries are specially designed to last longer. There is a deep cycle battery. Traditional submerged batteries or the new annual general meeting of shareholders or gel technologies. Each type has its advantages and disadvantages. You can choose the appropriate one according to what you needs.

When to use deep cycle batteries?

Deep cycle batteries provide sustained energy. It makes them ideal for certain applications that require more than a quick start. The most common applications of deep cycle batteries include:

l Solar/Off-Grid battery.

l Inverter/UPS battery.

l Marine battery.

l In recreational vehicles to power electronics.

What is the best lead-acid deep cycle battery?

Choosing the best battery depends on many factors. Different types of batteries offer different advantages. Before buying a battery, you should consider some factors: your budget, the nature of your necessity, and the battery life.

Flooded Lead-Acid

The oldest and most basic type is a submerged lead-acid battery, in which the electrolyte (acid) is in the form of liquid. Submerged batteries were the most common deep-cycle batteries until 10-12 years ago, and they are still used for some large-scale off-grid systems. During the process of charging and discharging a fully charged battery, volatile gases will be generated and discharged from the battery to prevent the pressure from increasing. The disadvantage of this is that the electrolyte level decreases and needs to be filled regularly. However, it also enables the battery to be maintained, so if regular maintenance is carried out, the fully charged batteries can last for a long time (up to 20 years or more).

Valve regulated lead-acid battery-VRLA.

Sealed VRLA or valve-regulated lead-acid batteries (AGM and Gel) work in the same way as the submerged battery, but they are sealed in a leak-proof casing, and the electrolyte is non-liquid. VRLA batteries use a gas recombination system that combines the gases created during the charging/discharging process back into the battery. This prevents almost all electrolytes from being lost by inflation (nearly 99%). This means that they are also safer and easier to operate and transport than batteries filled with water.

Lead-Carbon Batteries

Lead-carbon batteries is an advanced VRLA lead-acid battery. It uses a common positive lead plate (anode) and negative carbon plate (cathode). The carbon acts as a kind of ‘supercapacitor “, allowing faster charging and discharging, and prolonging life under a partially charged state. Like ordinary gel-sealed batteries, lead-carbon batteries are also sealed, and gel electrolytes are usually used to improve safety and low maintenance.

Tubular Gel OPzV Lead-Acid Batteries

Several high-quality battery manufacturers have designed batteries with high performance and long cycle life, which are specially designed for solar energy devices. The tubular VRLA batteries are connected in series to form a 24 V or 48 V deep cycle battery pack. If the specific charging parameters are met and the battery is kept in the correct temperature range (usually 15-30℃), the tubular gel battery can provide a very long cycle life, which can reach 5000 cycles (15 years) under 20% DOD and 3000 cycles under 40% DOD.

Tips to use Deep Cycle Lead-Acid Batteries

1.Select a deep cycle battery that suits the environment!

When choosing a deep-cycle battery, many consumers pay attention to the price, physical size, weight, or capacity of the product, without considering the position of the battery in the application.

2Check the state of charge in your battery regularly!

If the open-circuit voltage (OCV) falls below 12.5 volts when the battery is not in use, please recharge it. Deep cycle batteries are not designed to keep a low charge state, it will form sulfate on the battery panel, thus reducing the performance and cycle life of the battery.

3. Do not overfill maintainable deep cycle batteries!

It’s important to check whether the battery has sufficient electrolyte covering the battery plates if you have a maintainable battery. Do not overfill when the battery is discharged if topping up is required because the fluid levels will rise when the battery is charged and may overflow. Fill it up with distilled water or deionized water, not with sulfuric acid. When the battery is fully charged, it is filled to the bottom of the nozzle extensions.

4. Don’t fully discharge the deep cycle lead-acid battery!

The deeper the battery is discharged, the shorter the total cycle life of the battery is. We recommend discharging a battery to a DOD of not less than 50%, and a maximum of 80%. If you discharge the battery to 50% of its capacity, instead of 100%, the battery will generate an extra 40% amperage during the battery life.

5. Always make sure your charging settings match your battery!

Make sure that the charging setting of DC-DC matches the battery. The incorrect setting can lead to excessive use of water in the battery, which will lead to leakage, overcharge or undercharge of the battery, and lead to premature battery failure.

6. Never add or replace only one battery in a battery pack!

When connecting batteries, be sure to check whether the service life, capacity (size), brand/type, and voltage of batteries are the same. Do not use batteries of different sizes in a mixed way. It will create an unbalance in charging and will overcharge one battery and undercharge the other when you mix batteries of different sizes and capacities.

7. Always make sure that the wires are properly installed on the batteries!

When connecting any electrical loads to a 12 v parallel battery pack, be sure to connect the cables so that the load is evenly distributed throughout the battery pack.

Conclusion

Lead-acid deep cycle battery is designed to provide a constant current over several hours, compared with high power for several seconds from starting batteries. It can be used in Off-Grid batteries, UPS batteries, marine batteries, recreational vehicles to power electronics. According to your budget, the nature of demand, and the battery life, you can choose 4 kinds of lead-acid deep cycle batteries. And we hope the 7 tips about lead-acid deep cycle batteries can help you.
